What budget Satellite receiver?

  • I need a new satellite receiver, and I'm looking to spend around £70.

What I need is 12 volt (for use off grid), and the dish to turn 75 80 degrees east & west of my position (I bet they all do, but my openbox doesn't).

Obviously HD and usb pvr, the usual playback of video codecs mp4 h264 etc.

I've looked at these on the sponsors website; what do you think?

    Formuler F4 Turbo,

    Edision OS nino 1x DVB-S/S2,

    Technomate TM-Nano-M3 DVB-S/S2

Your thoughts would be appreciated. :)

  • We'd suggest the F4 Turbo out of those 3 models. Superb quality and excellent package. Comes with loads of extra accessories including universal remote, wall mount bracket and external IR receiver. Really nice package.

As mentioned by ekkostar, the Tiviar Alpha+ is an excellent spec receiver, very high spec for £99, only problem is that this model has an internal 240v PSU, so doubt it will be suitable for your needs as you've requested 12v psu.

  • Ok, I have my F4 Turbo.

All looks ok, a very impressive epg; certainly puts the Openbox V8s in the dark.

Now forgive my ignorance, but what what do I have here, an Enigma 2?

Can someone point me to a channel list, and anything else that I might need.

    Thanks for your help. :)

  • Yes the F4 Turbo uses Enigma 2 operating system.

What image are you using on your receiver? Most images have channel lists available via their online plugin feeds.

  • I have no idea. I just took it out of the box and started using it. When I bought it on line there was an option for 3 settings, I think the one that I chose was "Factory". Is this what you mean?

I didn't intend using it on the net, what do I do hook it up to the lan and find an update in the menu?

  • Yes it's factory OpenATV from 2006, lan hooked up and no updates or anything available.

It needs flashing but I don't know how to do it.

    * UPDATE * Download the latest OpenATV from http://www.opena.tv. Download the "Flash guide" from http://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk forum, in the Formular section.

Epg is one big list of programs, just one page with hundreds of programs, and I can't find a channel list to download.

    * UPDATE * The new version of OpenATV has a download / update, Epg via internet.

There's NO MANUAL that comes with this receiver, so your left groping in the dark.

Outside it got slightly cloudy with slight drizzle, and it could only find 12 programs with a fresh install of Astra 28.2e.

Eventually the sky's cleared up from the drizzle and it picked up 28.2e with loads of progs.

    * UPDATE * This was due to the reciever falling asleep / not moving the dish.

I think that most of the problems with this is due to the old software.

    * UPDATE * Same problems with OpenVIX, changed to OpenATV much better now, but still has other problems.

Oh, the caddie doesn't fit the back of the tv, not in the slightest, nor the screws to fix it.

I'm not even going to mention the super short lead on the power supply. Oh' damn I did.
