Dreambox 920 motherboard defect

  • Hello, please can you anybody give me an advise where to buy a new motherboard for this type of a box? Unfortunately I have bought a specimen with a defective motherboard (it constantly freezes even in standby mode) and I'm sure it's from a defective series that is known to have a defect on the motherboard. Is it possible to get this original working motherboard anywhere and how difficult is it to replace it? Thank you for an answer in advance...Pruducer the Dream Property GmbH, Lünen, Germany did not respond to my inquiry about the defective motherboard at all?!

Hello piterfree, thank you for answering me, so according to your answer to my thread you think that too high temperature of CPU of my Dreambox could be the cause of frequent total freeezing of my device rather than a certain defective production run with a defective motherboard how I have read at some resources on the net that there was a problem with motherboard in a production run in about 2020? For example this morning's temperature of my device when I turned it on after night standby mode was about 64 degrees. It is normal or indicate it something wrong? Thank you

  • You are 10 to 20 degrees higher, as you can see they are able to get 45° when you have 64° (without using it and in Standby),

but mine, working ok (in standby), still at 75°, but it's a DM900 that are much higher in temperature (and is the series that failed, not the DM920).

I suggest you try with a fan directly on the processor, if the defect continues contact Dreambox support, there is no replacement motherboard on the market.

OK, thank you much Toysoft for your explanation, I am now waiting for Johnny B. to answer to my message how you advised me...

  • Thank you banshee, do you think that company is truthworthy and reliable verified distributor?

Which image are you using ?

Can you try mine and let me know ?

  • Hello Toysoft, I use OpenAtv, first 6.3 then 6.4 and now 7.3 because it is the only one verified image beside Dream Elite 7.1 and GP 4 according to the e-shop retailer on which the local Czech made plugin ArchiveCZ/SK with the inner addon O2TV 2.0 for replaying/streaming local IPTV provider i.e. O2 TV works. But according to that I have read on the net it should not be probably a problem? Are you sure TS that the before mentioned a defective series of Dreamboxes with defective motherboard was related to Dreambox 900 and not 920?! I am still waiting for Johnny_B replay. Jalajala, are you sure that the high temperature is not the problem and that fan doesn't help here?! Some other people point to high temperature as a possible cause of my problem or have you also heard of a certain series with a Dreambox 920 (from about 2020) with a faulty motherboard? Thank you much in advance.

  • You have no risk to try the openpli 8.xstar for the DM920UHD, it's built with the same bases of the OpenATV images, opensource code and cores,

The Freeze and motherboard dying is for the DM900UHD, I never seen this happening on the DM920UHD.

On my experience on IT, when something freezes it can be due to the software (huge bug, but I find this remotely possible with opensource), or the CPU/Chipset that overheat and put itself into protection, and so freezes all, stops.

It would be important to find out when and on which exact process/action the box freezes, to see if it's random or on a specific task. This could help to differentiate a software problem (image) to a hardware (chipset)... This could help to try again and again the task who freezes, and find out where the software fails, this is the reason I tip you to use a different image as openpli to see how it goes. If it's random, and due to temperature, so the chipset freezing, then it will happen at any moment, and so will require a better heat dissipation... but I don't think of hardware fault on the DM920UHD (which is common on DM900UHD boxes/hardware).

  • Well, maybe I will try your image later but I want to say first that I am convinced that the freezing is completely accidental according to my experience so far not depending on some specific task. Unfortunately I have never monitored the temperature of CPU intentionally before because I handled with information that there were a defective series (with the faulty motherboard) in about 2020. But now I can only say that when in a standby mode so after turning on the device has usually about 64 degrees and after several hours nostop usage above 68 degrees. Now the device works for about 2 days of normal use without freezing, but this has happened already before that it worked for several days normally. Sometimes I had to turn the rear switch off and on several times in a row before the device started working again for a longer period of time further (I did not checked the temperature of CPU at that time).

  • So, reading your description, it could be related to some fault on the image/software, your temperatures are 64-68° which is ok, and it freezes randomly (could let think about some hardware problem, but you need to investigate more to see if there is some common thing on these crashes).

well, thank you TS, I'm attaching the last crash.log file, but I don't remember what was going on at that moment, whether the receiver froze as usual accidentally or in connection with some specific non-standard action, unfortunately. But it is impossible for me as a layman to find out or figure out anything important about freezing from this file.
