after upgrading from 10.6 R2 to R3 on my VU+SOLO4K it would NOT boot anymore (and i had to start over) the image is installed on multiboot and with R2 it worked without problems!!!
now my question would be :
Is it possible to just install the update from R1 to R2 without it automatically switching from R1 to R3? 
or do i have to leave the 10.6 R1 version forever?

Assume you are talking about Egami. I updated from 6.1 to 6.2 and it went straight to 6.3 without any issues on my vu+ solo4k. Showed it was about 128 files and gave a warning about potentially now being unstable due to so many files but has worked without an issue.
Remove languages you don't use and there will be much less packages to update.
It doesn't matter if you update from R1 to R3 or R2 to R3.
It's a different python and that's why there may be problems.
First, install a clean R1 and try updating R3 without installing anything. I upgraded Vu+ Ultimo 4K this way and now I'm using it.
I think there is a problem with R1 and R2.

I installed it from R1 which I had backed up. It became R2. A day or two later, I was asked to upgrade to R3.
