Combo Boxes or Linux only recommendations

  • Hi, recently moved to Thailand and thinking of replacing my older vu+ solo 4k with a box that does not have satellite receivers as not required here as IPTV only. I am looking for requirements as to whether I should go for a combo box or just straight Linux. It has to be able to run the latest images and have enough ram to enable me to multi boot them. I also want to setup recording easily and am not sure if a combo box does that easily as recording on separate FireTV Cube was always hit and miss for me and I need to be consistent as recording UK channels over here at night for the wife to watch the following day due to +7 hour time difference and vu+ does this almost flawlessly. I would also miss the amazing plugins that members here code to make IPTV so easy to handle. Almost talking myself out of a combo and sticking to Linux only.

I know every bodies needs are different but these are my basic requirements as I have been happy with my vu+ box for the past number of years so do not need to re-learn everything as now and old man :frowning face:

    Thanks

  • Your VU+ Solo 4k, is a linux box, just avoid using the Sat, and continue using it as you did only for IPTV/Streaming,

If you want DVB-T2/T, then you can replace the tuner with a Terrestrial one (it should be swapable)... that's all.

Thanks, for the response but I am asking as the old vu+ is getting tired and troublesome at times so on the lookout for a replacement and like to get peoples view on the newer stuff.

I agree with TS, keep your solo 4k....it is still a great STB - just disable your tuners if they not going to be used.

Also any combo STB is either one or the other of that combo....IE - you cant use both sides of the combo at the same time.

Its far better to have 2 devices even on the same TV....

changing to a different HDMI input takes seconds rather than up to 2 minutes to reboot between say android and linux.

Also most peeps ( and i agree) will say that a combo never really works well on either side - IE both the linux and Android side of the STB are not great.

IMO the combo is a good idea in theory..... but in reality dose not work well in practice.

First and foremost remember happy wife...... happy life :smiling face:

Whilst i love my live sport, that i get from my sat dishes and the thousands of channels they offer......my wife and kids don't really use them at all.

Absolutely everything they watch is "on demand" from all of the different streaming services -( we have just about all of the official ones as well as multiple IPTV providers.)

So i don't really save any money by having my sat dishes :laugh1:

its not worth the hassle of me trying to explain that every thing they watch "on demand" could have been recorded anyways..... :exploding head:

UK channels over here at night for the wife to watch the following day due to +7 hour time difference

Some streaming device (like your fire cube) and a VPN should enable you to use the "on demand" stuff from BBC, ITV, Channel 4, my 5 etc etc

As you probably know some IPTV providers offer there own "on demand" content as well.

  • Generally if you reflash th eimage, the box will be as new... as it's an old software and probably also some plugins, etc...

So it's always better just to reflash from zero, and your box wil look like new,

  • I see people saying stay with Linux which is what I have decided also but what new box would people choose that does not have satellite tuners. My Vu+ has issues with sound either not working or occasional crackling so not sure if a part is breaking down also can freeze on starting up. I have openatv 7.5.1 along with openbh 5.5.1.005 and Egami 10.6 installed as my images on the built in multi boot and not openmultiboot and they all have the same issue so assume it is a hardware problem, hence recommendation for a new box.

There is not many STB's without a tuner TBH.....

There is a version 3 octagon SF8008 on the way, which may be worth looking at.... im thinking about it myself

The m2 SSD and SD card slot should make recording easy..... and keep things tidy.

Here are details on its specs from amazon (translated)
