Those were not commands, they were environment variables. You need those set as a minimum to get the front panel buttons to work.
From a serial terminal type: printenv
and see what is set. It should look something like:

To set some environment variable you need to use "setenv"
After setting, you need to "saveenv" to save the settings. You should do this after setting the bootargs and before you enter the boot command.
Typing "help" or just "?" at the serial command prompt will give you a list of commands you can use.
